The wood gas generators allowed to feed the petrol engines with a mix of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane obtained by burning wood with limited air, allowing the engines to work at less than a half of its nominal power. 15 millions of wood gas generators were sold in Europe in the nineteen forties.
