A child dies in a car from heat buildup

The first child to die this year after being forgotten in the car happened in Florida.
How can people be that stupid? It boggles my brain that someone with a child, or looking after a child, can forget where they are. Like a pair of shoes or a jacket. I bet they take better care of their wallet.

The news doesn't want to blame the parent so they word it like this
"About one-in-four fatalities happen when a child gains access to a hot vehicle."

So three in four happen because the 'responsible' adult left the child in the hot vehicle!

I did a quick web search and discovered that it's common enough in the US to even have a name

Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke (PVH)

I don't mean to bash the US here, for all I know people might be as careless or evil in some other hot place but the prevalence of cars and the number of short journeys undertaken probably makes it more likely in the US.

The National Safety Council website is a fascinating, and disturbing, rabbit hole and unlike the impression that many of us on the outside now have of the US, the NSC looks outside the US as well and I found this on the International page:

@Baremine It is safer back there. Front seat has the airbag and it will take the kids head off in a crash.

@PoohSmasher Yep. Happened to a mom in Boise a few years ago when I lived down in that area. Driving slowly in a mall parking lot, kid in a car seat, and someone backed out in front of her. She hit the car, airbag went off, and her kid's head flew right out the open window. I can't even imagine ever being able to get over that...

@PoohSmasher it got lost somewhere but passenger side airbag can be turned off. Airbags should be outlawed. Some so called safety equipment is really dangerous.
Our new cars have so much safety equipment on them that they are dangerous.

There has to be a way to greatly reduce these incidents.

Maybe motion detectors or pressure sensors in seats that sound an alarm if the engine is not running. Hell my phone lets me know if I leave my laptop behind. Surely you can put a tag on a baby.

@MoveAlong This would be something AI should attend to. "Excuse me sir, did you forget your child in the back seat?", or maybe it opens the windows and turns on the AC and calls the police.

They even made a movie about it. 😬 I don't doubt it's made well but I have zero interest in watching it.
