If it were possible should California secede from the Union ?

Who would be happier with California leaving the US, Californians or the rest of the USA?

California leaving the United States to become an independent country
The proposed initiative to gather signatures for a vote on whether California should leave the United States and become an independent country has been cleared by the California Secretary of State. The initiative, known as "Calexit," aims to place the question on the November 2028 ballot. If at least 50% of registered voters participate in the election and at least 55% vote "yes," it would be considered a "vote of no confidence in the United States of America" and an "expression of the will of the people of California" to become an independent country. However, this would not change California's current government or relationship with the United States. The initiative requires the collection of 546,651 signatures from registered voters and must be submitted to county elections officials by July 22, 2025. The fiscal impact of the initiative is estimated to be around $10 million in one-time election-related costs and $2 million annually to operate the commission.

While the rest of the United States would be delighted to build a wall around California and leave it to rot and stew in its own effluvia of homelessness, trash, extremely badly run government, and drug abuse, it is not likely that 55% of the citizenry would agree to it. More's the pity.

Then there is the history of secession to consider. It was not allowed to happen prior to the Civil War...and when Texas tried to secede more recently, (1997), the FBI became involved and there was a shootout.

If California TRIES to secede. there goes Gavin Newsome's bid for the Presidency of the United States...🤣🤣🤣...as if he had a chance in hell.

No one would be "happier". Odds are high that if California goes, so will other Western states. Note: talk of California's secession started the day trump was "re-elected", as everyone in the state (of any party) knows that trump hates them (he has made no secret of that).

Weather they realize it or not, the US needs California - and vise versa. IF California secedes, it will have a major impact on the rest of the US (other states who are currently being shunned and/or destroyed by the current administration will be watching the outcome closely). PLUS, if secession happens, trump will immediately try to invade to the "new country" to claim it back, causing an all out civil war (with remaining states taking sides).
As for the cost... the price of an election is normal no matter what (California has numerous elections), but the loss of income and military bases will be damaging for the US.

Good luck:

California has the largest state debt in the U.S., with state and local government debt totaling approximately $1.6 trillion and a recent $12 billion budget deficit. The state's debt is driven by unfunded pension and healthcare liabilities, lower-than-expected revenue growth, and high spending on infrastructure and services

@WasEP Oh my!

California wouldn't leave the United States. most of their money is federal funds. They would have to have trade talks with other countries and they would most likely get tariff tax on goods of all kinds

@lilylovesgaming1986 That's possible 👍

Quick fact check. From 2015 to 2023, over these nine years, California paid more in taxes in six of the nine (2020, 2021, and 2023). If you exclude Covid spending, which made all states recieve more than they contributed, then California paid more in taxes in 8 of the 9 recent years. The only year they didn't was 2020, because they shut down for covid and therefore collected and paid less taxes.

In other words, they would be better off disconnected from the feds. Also, 9 of the top 10 states that get more then they pay are red states. Don't promote bad information.

Mexico because they’d think it was easy pickins for them to take back if it were free from the rest of the USA. A huge amount of beaches, fishing, farmland, oil, forests etc.

@cherokeepatti That's a good point!
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M

Last time we had talk of "independent states", in the USA, we ended up in a civil war.
