Have You Ever Explored Underground Tunnels In Your City?

The boy is 15 and has a friend who lives near a tunnel entrance. He invited him & several other boys over this afternoon to go explore the tunnel. The boy brought his headlamp and wore it so they made him lead the way since he had a better view of what was there & had to tell the rest what it was. The other boys had the flashlights on their cell phones. They walked over a mile to the business district…with a drive-in restaurant, got drinks, walked to a 7-11 & a grocery store. Bought drinks, bottled water and for some reason the boy was craving Romaine lettuce so he bought a large container of it and all the other boys tried it and they finished it off. I asked him what was in the tunnel, he said they saw what looked like abandoned mattresses like some homeless might have been camping in it, a door off of a Porta-Potty, a lot of spray-paint graffiti….and they nearly went into a large nest of spiders. Sounds like he had a lot of fun. He headed straight to the shower when he got home before he would sit down and eat dinner.

If I were you, I would tell the boy, "Once and done." If any violent homeless, or even people on the run from the law had been living there, the boys might have been attacked.

@4meAndyou I told him that there could be a transient staying down there on drugs & violent and then they are in a tunnel where no one could hear them yell. And I’ve also told him that ex cons are attracted to campus areas (this tunnel goes from a housing addition to a business district near the campus) that hang out and try to befriend students. Not easy getting into the campus buildings like it was before to hang out so they may find tunnels to sleep in when it’s not raining. My friend was a janitor in one of the campus buildings and an ex con got out of prison and went into the building (an academic one) she worked in, she would get there about 4 in the morning and work. Someone was getting into her unlocked closet while she was working and taking the change out of her purse. Then a secretary came to her and asked if she knew anything about missing money in her desk. She told her that she had come up missing change in her purse more than once. So the campus police did a stakeout and caught this guy. He would leave before the office people got there and come back and hang out in the restrooms till the building was locked at night after milling around in town & eating meals at a nearby soup kitchen. He had been sleeping in the ceiling, it was a drop-down ceiling with acoustical tiles that could be removed. He would climb up on a secretary’s desk and get into the ceiling area and sleep there. The police found a dirty comforter and a pile of porn mags. Said he had a long rap sheet too.

@cherokeepatti It's amazing how people can live like rats in the ceilings. I have heard of people who sneak into houses and live very, very quietly at night in the attics...and in the day when everyone is gone to work they come downstairs and get water and food.

@4meAndyou Yeah I heard of that too. A woman thought there were rats in the attic and it was someone living up there. They’d leave while she went to work and let themselves in before she came home. Yikes.
