How many different accents are in America?

Mexican, Italian, New York, New Jersey
Last I heard (and not entirely sure how true it is) America has about 68 distinct dialects or accents.

@PrivateHell That sounds about right. There are people who are "tuned in" to the differences and have lived just about everywhere. These rare people can pretty much tell what state you are from just from talking to you for a few minutes. The weird thing is, your accent can change. I grew up in the midwest, but I've lived all over. I spent many years on the East Coast. So some people I just met would guess I was from Boston, by the way I talk. And they aren't far off. I consider Southern New Hampshire to be my "home" now. But that area is often referred to (half jokingly) as "Northern Massachusetts".
@mikeylyksit I can relate. I am from Oklahoma originally, but have travelled the US my entire adult life. First as a trucker for 26 years, now in an RV full time. Unless I am tired or angry, people have a hard time guessing where I am from. When I am tired, I sound like Hank Hill from King of the Hill.
