I've gone as far as 3 days without food and water and it was already frightening..I was at a camping by myself.
I was following a naturopathic doctor who did 6 days of drought fast and was advising to not do it without having someone nearby..
40 days sound too far but nothing seems impossible.
There is energy available around us too and our skin absorbs some as well...
But definitely it is about our spirits.. there are weird things happening in the absence of food, water and the rest of stimuli, speech, etc.. and as there are big obstacles and great difficulties, there are also big milestones and reservoirs of strength in equal amounts perhaps.

Ancient people had a history of fasting, it was part of their weekly sometimes daily activities. They could fast for long periods of time. A human can go one to two months without food.

One person said to be recorded to go over 300 days without food, may have been a very large person.

It also depends on the type of fasting, like Daniel, it is said he fasted by retaining from sweets. John the Baptist fasted every day, his diet consisted of honey and locust. Reframing from eating meat and bread or animal products but could probably eat a small quantity fruit and nuts daily.

Man only assumes the type of fasting Jesus did, as an absolute we don't know.

"The biblical accounts of Jesus's 40-day fast do not explicitly state whether he drank water. However, the consensus among scholars and theologians is that Jesus likely drank water during his fast. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record Jesus's 40-day period of testing in the wilderness immediately following his baptism by John the Baptist. These accounts are brief but pivotal, setting the stage for Jesus’s public ministry. The narrative unfolds with three specific temptations presented by Satan: turning stones into bread, throwing himself down from the temple, and worshiping Satan in exchange for worldly power. Jesus resists each temptation by quoting Scripture. Literal reading of the text sometimes obscures the meaning and purpose of a passage. It's a fair question, though.

You would think a writing inspired by god would be less ambiguous.

@MoveAlong Possibly, but it doesn't necessarily follow.

Because He is God

also because in the language of the time 40 was often used as a figure of speech to mean "for as long as it took"
You know, maybe it’s a tall tale. But ask Jonah after surviving being eaten by a whale for three days.

It wasn't a whale, it was a fish that God created right then for that purpose.

Probably the best way the ancient people could describe to what happened

@jshm2 what does it say?
Jesus (God the Son) was upheld by the Father through the Spirit during fasting.

How the heck did Jesus survive fasting all food and drink for 40 days?

Moses did it twice without kidney failure or stinking up 100 square miles!!
It's all allegory.
