Satan and the serpent from Genesis. They are clearly different characters. Why do so many Christians conflate the two?

Maybe to justify their misogynie and partriarchy. Eve was convinced by the snake to eat the apple leading to humanities exile from Eden.
Based on this for example women were executed based on accusations of witchcraft. According to christians It was more likely for them to be in league with Satan.
