Last Sunday the reading at my church was yet again about Sarah and how mean she was. Well, if she was indeed "mean" for wanting Hagar gone depends on the lens—historical, cultural, or religious—through which ones views this complex biblical story. Even recent events tell us that the lens may be different. But what does the Bible tell us to overcome that?
The priest mentioned in his sermon the sparrow and those little birds are mentioned several times in the Bible. The "little sparrow" is famously mentioned by Jesus in the New Testament to illustrate God's deep care for all creation. Despite being of very low value at the time, Jesus emphasized that not even one falls to the ground without the Creator's knowledge.
Moreover, spiritually, the sparrow symbolizes also joy, community, resilience, and self-worth. Despite its small size, this lively bird carries powerful meaning across many cultures—representing divine protection, the value of simplicity, and the strength that comes from embracing who you are.
*Self-Worth & Empowerment:
The little sparrow teaches that one doesn't need to be big nor flashy to make a massive impact. The little bird symbolizes confidence in ones own skin and a reminder that one is deeply valued, regardless of external measures of success. Through the lens of wealth one sees less.
*Joy in Simplicity:
Because the sparrows are energetic and ubiquitous, they remind one to appreciate the present moment and find happiness in everyday, simple things. Do try to look through the lens of being humble enough and measure yourself up to simplicity.
*Community & Teamwork:
Highly social birds, sparrows remind one of the importance of social connections, relying on ones own communities, and protecting the vulnerable. It allows to locate food sources more quickly, protect themselves from predators, and reduce the stress of exploring new environments.
*Resilience & Adaptability:
Sparrows thrive in nearly every environment. They symbolize the inner strength required to adapt to life's changes and bounce back from adversity, reminding one that true inner strength doesn't require greatness or loud aggression, but rather persistence to weather storms.
