How does the Bible describe a wise person?
He is kind, thoughtful, and understanding of others' difficulties; he strives to do the biblically right thing in all situations and ultimately, he works towards peaceful resolutions in all relationships. He is characterized by wisdom: smart by deep understanding, keen discernment, and a capacity for sound judgment.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3 verses 5 to 6. This passage means that God knows the best way. At times we can't figure things out on our own and have no answers and we must acknowledge Jesus as Lord of all, who is infinitely wiser than us. The first thing any follower of Christ should do when faced with a decision, is ask God's advice.
A wise person is able to use their experience and knowledge in order to make sensible decisions and judgments. They are well informed and do not make hasty decisions, but seeks the Lord's direction and guidance. They educate themselves, are disciplined, admit their mistakes and learn from them, are patient, take instruction humbly, they can handle rejection and failure, they know that they can only control themselves, and they are guided by the wisdom of God. If you are a wise person, you can wisely manage your finances, as well. Wise people put first things first and last things last. They make Christ head of their home, putting Him first in all decision making. They make family priority, before hobbies or free time. They pay off debt, before they buy something new. Wise people have their life sorted out and they know where they should direct their attention. They are trustworthy and steadfast and do not live beyond their means.
What is so amazing is that the Holy Spirit is willing to share God's infinite wisdom with you, for making the right decisions and challenges you face every day. The Bible says that if any lack wisdom, let him ask of the Lord and he shall receive it. Wisdom equips us to handle difficult situations and relationships. It helps you work smarter, not harder. Those who have God's wisdom will show it in the way that they live, because a wise person walks in righteousness, according to Proverbs 10.
A good example of a wise decision comes from one of our founding Christian Presidents, Thomas Jefferson, who made the wise decision to purchase the Louisiana territories. On July 4th, 1803 the United States acquired $828,000 square miles of land held by the French at a cost of less than three cents per acre.
