The Dead Know Nothing? The Lord helps us understand Ecclesiastes 9:5
A lot of people read Ecclesiastes 9 5 and wonder:
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing.
Does that mean when someone dies, they just go to sleep and don’t know anything at all?
No. The Bible shows us they are very much alive in their spirit.
So what was Solomon saying?
Think about the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon wrote it under the sun. That means he was looking at life from an earthly perspective. From what we can see here on earth.
Ecclesiastes 9 5 6 says: For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun.
Did you catch that last part? Under the sun.
Solomon was not talking about Heaven or Hell. He was talking about this earth. Once a person dies, they no longer know what is happening here. They cannot go to work anymore. They cannot call their family. They cannot fix mistakes or make new plans. Their part in life under the sun is finished.
But their spirit? That lives on.
Jesus showed us this in Luke 16. The rich man died and went to hell. Lazarus died and went to be with Abraham. And both of them knew exactly where they were. They remembered. They felt. They spoke.
2 Corinthians 5 8 says: We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
When a Christian dies, we go to be with Jesus right away. We are more alive than ever.
So Ecclesiastes 9:5 is not saying the dead are unconscious.
It is saying their work on earth is done. The things of this world do not concern them anymore.
That is why it is so important to choose Jesus now, while we are still under the sun. Because after this life, there are only two places with Him, or without Him.
And for those of us who belong to Christ, death is not the end. It is going Home.
Philippians 1:23 says: I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.
So do not be afraid of that verse. It is not about losing awareness. It is about God calling us to live for Him today, while we still can.
