John was born on this day 1725, his mum , who died when he was young, was a Christian and prayed that he would become a preacher. John however totally rejected his mother's faith and went to sea , he was a very cruel, wild man, a blasphemer and drunk, his shipmates hated him and one time when he fell overboard didn't want to bother rescuing him, and instead of throwing him a lifeline used the ship's harpoon which left him with a permanent limp. He got a job on a slave ship, which he went on to captain. One day he was in such a great storm at sea , his ship was about to break up and he remembered his mothers faith and the first time in years he prayed to God, and God saved him and totally transformed his life. He gave up his job and later went on to support the abolishion of the slave trade. He became a Christian minister, sharing his faith which he had spent so many years denying He is most famous for writing probably the best known hymn ever
None of us deserve the grace of God but He offers it to anyone who will accept. None of us are too bad or too good to acceptHis grace. God totally transforms lives, Will you let Him transform yours?
This is the most beautiful post I have read in a long time. Thank you so much for this. I hope everyone will read it. What a beautiful true story. God can save even the most hardened hearts, if we will but allow him.
@TAReturns most older hymns had a good number of verses. Some had as many as 8 or 10, but they were cut down to "fit in the hymnals" of the modern day church. There are some denominational hymnals that include verses not found in other hymnals, but very rarely will there be a verse not in the original composition
