It seriously contravened the IOC mission statement,ie “Recognising that sport occurs within the framework of society, sports organisations within the Olympic Movement shall apply political neutrality. They have the rights and obligations of autonomy, which include freely establishing and controlling the rules of sport, determining the structure and governance of their organisations, enjoying the right of elections free from any outside influence and the responsibility for ensuring that principles of good governance be applied.”

The Olympic Charter also states:

“The mission of the IOC is to promote Olympism throughout the world and to lead the Olympic Movement. The IOC’s role is: (…) to oppose any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes.”

These principles have been recognised and supported repeatedly by several resolutions of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in recent years, including expressly “acknowledging the fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter” (A/RES/78/10 – Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic Ideal from November 2023).

If mocking another's religious conviction is insensitivity count me out
@bookerdana How is playfully referencing Ancient Greek mythology a contravention of those rules?
bookerdana · M
@Adeptlinguist Playfully mocking te Last Supper ...IOC also says to act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic Movement
@bookerdana It isn’t mocking the Last Supper. It references Dionysus. Last I looked, he wasn’t part of that particular myth.

You’re just a bit sensitive.

Focus on real issues instead - like school shootings, for example. Or lack of universal healthcare. Now those are shocking.

@Adeptlinguist Thats why its all over every news service and Social Media
@bookerdana France24 deleted their report as it was mistaken. As for social media…

How about listening to the creator?

@bookerdana You still haven’t explained how it contravened the rules.

@Adeptlinguist Discriminatory against 2.5 BILLION people
@bookerdana @bookerdana You still haven’t explained the problem with it, either globally or in terms of alleged transgression of rules.
@bookerdana Discriminatory? How?

@Adeptlinguist Error occurred ..please try later
@bookerdana Works for me. I’ll find another link.

@Adeptlinguist Of course no response to this. How a fanciful representation of a Greek myth can be discriminatory against 2.5 BILLION people escapes me. Unless Christianity has been far less successful in displacing those earlier gods than has been claimed.
@bookerdana The Olympics have always been political. Look up Avery Brundage, who was an open Nazi sympathizer.

@LeopoldBloom Political but not religious.
@RageAgainstTheMachine The opening ceremony wasn't "religious" unless you follow the Ancient Greek religion and worship Dionysius. If any religion is going to be included, that should be that one, considering where the Olympics originated. People getting their panties in a bunch because they think the performance is mocking the Last Supper because it superficially resembles the Da Vinci painting are just looking for ways to be offended.
TheWildEcho · 61-69, M
@LeopoldBloom it was never meant to be religious
