LUKE 11 "Lord, teach us to pray," Jesus said to them, "When you pray, say:

[c=BF0000]
“ Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation., but deliver us from evil."[/c]

Why would He want to lead us into temptation???
Carazaa · F
@helenS Does he want to do that?
Carazaa · F
@helenS I am sincerely asking you what you think it means?
helenS · 36-40, F
@Carazaa If he doesn't want, then why would we ask him not to lead us into temptation?
helenS · 36-40, F
@Carazaa I can't understand that line. It is very deep.

@helenS Yes I think so too. I think God is in control of this world, but I don't think he is the tempter. I think Satan is and God is in control of what Satan can do and not do, as in the book of Job. But why did Jesus put it like that. Maybe the word "tempt" is not what we think of but more like "evil" Maybe a better translation is "Lead us not into evil"

@Carazaa Thank you – I think we should leave it as it is. We do not have a right to change the words until they satisfy our minds. There are things we can't understand – so what?

@Carazaa

There is a line in the Bible, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God," meaning you shall not put God to the test, so I think "lead us not into temptation" means do not bring us to the test (for being sinners, we would fail, without your grace).

@Thinkerbell Very true. There is a verse in Malachi though where God asks us to test him, in Malachi 3:10
"Bring the full tithe into the storehouse so there will be food in my house, and test me in this, says the LORD of heavenly armies, If I will not open the windows of heaven for you, and pour down a blessing so your barns will be full"

@Carazaa

Well, if God says to test Him, it's ok.

But Jesus and Moses said it is NOT ok to test Him when it's OUR idea to do so.

"Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah." (Deuteronomy 6:16)

@Thinkerbell Yes there are two different meanings entirely "Test me" in Malachi means the same as "trust me". And "tempting" the Lord is the same as sinning against God. We ask God for help us not to sin, to resist temptation to sin. God can put a hedge around us and our family to keep evil out. Sometimes he allows Satan to hurt us for the sake of spiritual warfare in heaven, as it says in The book of Job, God allowed Satan to attack Job for a time and Job was faithful. The whole point is no matter what, to be faithful and not sin. Sin will kill us.
"We are not at war against flesh and blood but against spiritual beings in heavenly places"
