LUKE 11 "Lord, teach us to pray," Jesus said to them, "When you pray, say:

Thanks for reminding us of this great prayer.

We know fromJames 1:13that God does not tempt us to sin. If God did tempt us to sin, He would be acting contrary to His holy nature, against His desire for us to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16), and against all other commandments in Scripture that tell us to avoid sin and flee temptation. In the Lord’s model prayer (Matthew 6:9–13), Jesus says, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (verse 13). The inclusion of a request for God not to lead us into temptation teaches us thatavoiding temptationshould be one of the primary concerns of the Christian life.

The idea of God leading His people is a main theme of Scripture. The book of Psalms especially is filled with pleas for God to lead us in His ways (Psalm 5:8;27:11), by His truth and righteousness, and in “the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:24). Along with leading ustowardgood, we understand that we are asking God to lead usaway fromevil. The petition in theLord’s Prayernot to be led into temptation reflects the believer’s desire to avoid the dangers of sin altogether. This phrase, then, must be understood in the sense of “permitting.” Jesus taught us to pray, “Do not ‘allow’ us, or ‘permit’ us, to be tempted to sin.”The believer can rightly ask to be delivered from testing as well as ask for the strength to endure it if it does come.

Beautiful thoughts expressed in the prayer. Its only after a sustained faith walk that the words speak to me. The worries of the day are endless, but according to this prayer that Jesus gave, the only requirement in life is to wish that God's will is fulfilled, we forgive others, and are not tested too harshly. Beautiful prayer!

@Thinkerbell Very true. There is a verse in Malachi though where God asks us to test him, in Malachi 3:10
"Bring the full tithe into the storehouse so there will be food in my house, [b]and test me in this,[/b] says the LORD of heavenly armies, If I will not open the windows of heaven for you, and pour down a blessing so your barns will be full"

Well, if God says to test Him, it's ok.

But Jesus and Moses said it is NOT ok to test Him when it's OUR idea to do so.

"Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah." (Deuteronomy 6:16)

@Thinkerbell Yes there are two different meanings entirely "Test me" in Malachi means the same as "trust me". And "tempting" the Lord is the same as sinning [i]against [/i]God. We ask God for help us not to sin, to resist temptation to sin. God can put a hedge around us and our family to keep evil out. Sometimes he allows Satan to hurt us for the sake of spiritual warfare in heaven, as it says in The book of Job, God allowed Satan to attack Job for a time and Job was faithful. The whole point is no matter what, to be faithful and not sin. Sin will kill us.

@Dave1955 Yes the NIV is what I pray too, or the American Standard but what I quoted is Luke's words in the 1611 King James Version that went out to the entire world and is translated to every language and to NIV to use simple English.
