Question for Christians

How easy is it for you to be accepting of atheists? In particular, the rude and aggressive ones.

Lately I'm getting pretty irritated by a special kind of atheist, the ones that just stop by Christian posts and leave a 馃槀 or who make posts belittling or attacking Christians. It seems to be happening more often recently and I've had them pop up on posts that have nothing to do with Christianity.

I think everyone should be able to voice what they believe in a respectful way and its really bothering me that some people can't be kind or just pass on by if it's not in alignment with their world view.

How do you manage this kind of thing? Do you just ignore or do you block? Lately I'm blocking in order to protect my own mental health.

I understand your point and I do not condone their behaviour, but it does work the other way round, too.

However, whatever their behaviour, by no means all non-Christians are atheists.

Why do so many SW users fall into that trap?

@ArishMell Non-Christians doesn't imply non-religious. The majority of the human race are into one form of religion or another. Atheism is a western ideology. Even among westerners, the majority are Christians. One could argue that they may be Christians but irreligious. This doesn't mean that they embrace atheism. Atheists are a very small minority.

@sree251 Well, that was my point; but I wonder if agnosticism is far more widely held than atheism.

There are also many who appear really not to care one way or the other - not actively disbelieving or even doubting any god, but simply can't be bothered to worry about it.

It is noticeable that so many SW users appear to divide the world into "Christians" and "atheists", and sometimes write as if they don't really understand "atheism", and indeed "agnosticism" they rarely if ever mention, mean.

@ArishMell Yes, I share your observation. Atheists are ideologues, fanatical not about the commitment to atheism but fiercely against Christianity. I wonder why?
Patientlywaiting46-50, F
@sree251 It seems to be a political thing, at least in America. American atheists I noticed are more likely to be liberal so I think they associate Christians with taking their rights away. In Britain, religion is never part of politics.
ArishMell70-79, M
@sree251 That may define some atheists but it is no more a credible charge against atheists generally, than saying Christians (Muslims, Jews, etc.,) are fanatical and fiercely against any other belief.

Some are, and openly so, even against rival sects of their own faith; but by no means all are like that.

We can not and must not generalise - and the crude oh-so-SimilarWorlds divide between "Christians" and "Atheists" is one huge, false generalisation.
ArishMell70-79, M
@Patientlywaiting There are constitutional links between Church and State in Britain but the politics generally are indeed ecumenical and secular.

They have to be because Britain hosts so many different religions and their sects, and none. One effect is the strong laws against religious discrimination.
Patientlywaiting46-50, F
@ArishMell do you have many people of differing religions in America?
ArishMell70-79, M
@Patientlywaiting I expect they do but I am neither American nor resident there.

We certainly do here: though a nominally Christian country, British society is of followers of all religions and none.
