Why does God use the pronoun us in Genesis 1:26?

In Genesis 1:26 God said let us make man in our image after our likeness. Who is the us and the our image and the our likeness referring to?

Genesis 1 : 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Good question, James. The fact of the matter is, Judaism was not always monotheistic in nature. In nature. The original Hebrew tribe actually broke away from the Canaanites, who worshiped numerous gods, including El, the supreme god, and Yahweh, a lesser ranking battle god. When the Hebrews made a clean break from the Canaanites, they merged the concept of El with the concept of Yahweh, creating a new god who was jealous of the other gods, and commanded the Hebrews to kill everyone who stood in their way.

@LordShadowfire He taught them in the 10 commandments to NOT KILL! But he also helped them in war! God conquered their enemies. Jesus helped them from the beginning.
