Now my friend, why judge another man writing at a different time period in a different culture? The problem with so many narrow minded Americans is that they judge everything by a 21st century American viewpoint. Now I am being polite here. When you actually know something about the culture Paul was writing in it makes perfect sense, but of course as a 21st century American you think everyone throughout history should think like you. Rather narrow, don’t you think, little buddie?

Like when he's writing Philemon about Onesimus and requests that if Onesimus owes anything to charge Paul for it and Paul will pay....except Paul then says "I'll pay it....and i won't even mention that you owe me your very soul!"....which is of course mentioning it lol.
It's ok if you don't find it funny, i do.
So what was the cultural landscape around that? Was it customary to remind people of what they owe you or that you could technically command them when making a request?

The word ‘mention’ us not in the Greek itself. Paul is writing to a person of importance whose slave Omesimus has run away which of course was a capital offence. Paul is sending him back trusting that Philemon will treat Onesimus as a brother not as a slave. He says that is the slave has wronged him in any way financially he, Paul, will pay it. Then he adds a typical personal touch. He was the one who brought the gospel to Philemon and led him to Christ so that is the debt - ie his very self - Philemon owes him. You have to understand what being a Christian means to understand what it means to have had someone bring you to the Lord. A very personal bond. @Pikachu

Yeah i get all that. You can tell just by reading the letter that they were friends. That's why Paul entreats him to treat Onesimus with the same friendship as Paul since he is now a brother in Christ.
Not sure about the exact word "mention" but in every translation i can find Paul is reminding him what he owes...while saying not to worry about it lol.
Like i said, no judgement just funny. We don't have to have the same sense of humour.

Sorry you are more intent on winning an argument than gaining knowledge so I’ll leave it there. I was hoping to have a chat with you about Onesimus I think you are just intent on putting other people down. Very sad . You are obviously a very insecure personality who finds it very difficult to communicate with other people on a normal level@Pikachu

@1354swrdt Hold it. I thought the Bible is a timeless document with moral guidance that applies to all men, in all places, at all times. But you're saying
why judge another man writing at a different time period in a different culture?
So which is it? If we're guilty of "presentism" when judging Bible figures for their support of slavery, shouldn't we take everything they say with a grain of salt?
Or you just have a soft spot for slavery because you're a white man who hasn't been affected by it?

@Pikachu Heh, you think "Ray" is Speedyman?
I've already proven that isn't his profile photo; his name probably isn't "Ray" either. And dollars to donuts, he's not in the UK.

@LeopoldBloom lol oh it's absolutely him. The pattern of behaviour, the types and form of insult. The self-righteous pretension.
And watch this:
@1354swrdt With God as your witness, did you previously post under the username Speedyman?
Last time i asked him that after he denied being Speedy, he refused to answer lol

@Pikachu Did Speedy stop posting?
The source of his profile photo is hilarious, although that image has been used as an “old guy meme” in other places, so he may have gotten it from one of those.
