@QuixoticSoul John of Patmos did get up to some freaky stuff in that cave, and there is a chance he had access to some psychedelic mushrooms. I've also seen some speculation that it was his attempt to frame the religion in a way that would appeal to new Greek converts because it shares some traits with the Leto/Apollo/Python myth.

John says he is shown things, and writes down what he sees (unless he is told not to do so).

There IS meaning there, partly because he has a guide and asks (Isaiah writes down the visions he has, but they seem to come in a rush/jumble, and it seems to me that he is trying to be a faithful reporter of that which he may not understand, but which he feels he must convey).

To put it into the most basic context, though, Jesus never said that we needed to understand any particular verse as a requirement for salvation.
