I’m in for a challenging 5 weeks.

My ESL class starts on Monday. Currently, 42 students are registered, & there are 10 more on the waiting list. 😳

I’ve never taught such a big class. The biggest class I’ve ever taught was 35 students with my first ESL class in 1998. On average over the years, I’ve taught 15 to 20 students. So this will be challenging, even with over 30 students.

I am assigned to the biggest classroom at the college, which can accommodate 66 students. There are two projectors since the classroom is so big. With the class that I taught this past spring, I had 20 students registered with 15 in daily attendance, and I only had one projector. It was a great class to teach because the students really got to know each other well, and I was able to give individual attention to my students.

It’s only in the summer sessions that they allow for such big classes. In the spring and fall semesters, classes max out at 28 students, and it is up to the teachers if they allow more students beyond that. But in the summer, classes max out at 42 students. They really need to add one more in person class because I already know that it won’t be as effective a teaching environment for me with that many students because it’s difficult to give individual attention to all those students every day. And those who have sporadic attendance, forget it. They’ll be lost.

I’m up for the challenge though. Let’s hope I can still build rapport with my students, even though it’s just a five week course. ⭐️

See if you can get some student aids to help you. I was a tutor in college for both math and computers.

They usually are past students that have done exceptionally well in previous classes. And it's basically free help. They sometimes are paid a little bit or receive other credits. I got a letter of recommendation from the dean.

@DeWayfarer It’ll be fine. I have 4 previous students in my class. They know how I teach, so I’m sure I can get them to help if needed. I’ll manage somehow. 😅

Best of luck!

All my classes in college were small. But I went to a small school for my undergraduate degree, and in graduate school there were few math graduate students. Even when I taught in graduate school class sizes were small (yet I still could not remember my students' names).

@JoyfulSilence Thank you 😇 Most of the time, my students can’t remember each other’s names either even after 4 mths together. Lol

Remember what they say, bigger is better ;)

Though sadly you'll obviously have to cut back on individual actives, and maybe have them work in smaller groups more with each other?

But you got this! :D

@Viper 😅

Exactly, more group work than pair work. 👌🏼
