and they told themselves "hey, why bother work anymore?" and left you hanging, because it didn't matter anymore due to the job end? What did your boss do with them?

No. If someone was fired, they were told to leave immediately and enjoy the two weeks pay while they looked for another job. It would be toxic to keep them around.

Yeah, that's why even with a 2 week notice employees will get paid for the 2 weeks, but they're gone today.
