The first? Hardly. Pretty much all of them (minus Peter who wasn't a pope) were non Christian.

@BritishFailedAesthetic If you're not Catholic, why show up on here to sow seeds of dissent against different Christian sects? There have been some pretty bad popes in 2,000 years; Peter, the first pope, was not one of them. The Catholic Church: Started by Jesus Christ in the first century. Protestant churches - hundreds or thousands of them, none existing prior to the 1500s. The Church of England was started by King Henry VIII, an absolute madman, so he could get a divorce. If you don't want me bashing your church, don't come on here and bash mine.😡
@graphite This is a forum criticising the former Pope.
I have listed many Christians to you preaching sola fide long before Luther- two that come to mind are Wycliffe and Jan Hus, eyc.

@BritishFailedAesthetic So let's throw in some comments about the first pope, Saint Peter, while we're at it. Meanwhile: https://www.catholic.com/audio/cot/my-big-question-for-defenders-of-sola-fide
Sub-head: In this episode, Trent reveals the one question he has for defenders of justification by faith alone that shows this theology is incoherent and overly complicates the plan of salvation God gave us through the Catholic church.

@graphite Peter wasn't a pompous pope 🤭
Lots of the confusion is your misunderstanding- you guys seem to look at evangelicals who take the sinners prayer as a "hocus pocus" and that's it. That's your understanding of 'sola fide'
What you guys call "salvation" is actually sanctification to us.
So when you believe on Christ, you will produce saving evidences and continue growing, not living as if he didn't exist.

@BritishFailedAesthetic I mentioned two categories. Christian and Catholic. While some were Christian most were Catholic. In my life time all the Popes except Frances were at least Catholic.
@graphite I have read about your church many times and I still cannot get how you get saved by Roman Catholic doctrine.
With us it is very simple.
