Am I the only one who finds it odd that military helicopters would train over a civilian airport at night?

Appears this has been the case all along, and they've had multiple near misses.

News to me.

The way CNN described it: the helicopters fly at or below 200 feet, and civilian air traffic flies above them, and then about the time they're going to go over the runway, they switch to a different pattern to allow civilian air traffic to land.

Saw some videos of multiple helicopters, flying real low, and taken by passengers on civilian planes, flying above them as they either take off or approach for a landing.

If you watch the clip taken of the tragedy, you can clearly see a plane veering to the left as it's taking off, and then right below it the explosion. Had to watch it a few times, before I figured out that nothing happened to that other plane.

I've landed at that airport before, at night, and never saw helicopters.

@Northwest Yeah, was noticing that other plane. Wonder what that pilot saw.

That’s a well established route, someone screwed up.

@DownTheStreet No doubt, just seems like a ticking time bomb.

@Bumbles that's what pilots are saying apparently
