He has a better chance than most. He hasn't been seduced by the woke side. Nor is his career dependent on appeasing the most radical elements. He can get in there and start cleaning house without the same sort of empathy a career person would be dealing with. As your post eludes to... a meritocracy.

I suspect that the only way Pete will be confirmed to his new post is to ram his appointment through when Congress is not in session.
The radical Democrat/Socialist/Marxists will oppose him and obstruct him at every turn.
The major advantage of Pete as Sec Def is that he is NOT a hidebound General more interested in his own advancement and obeying the status quo and making it to the top than in the good of the service.
That being said, I HATE his idea of removing all women in the military from active combat roles.
The radical Democrat/Socialist/Marxists will oppose him and obstruct him at every turn.

the only thing concerning to me is that he is taking the women out of combat. other than that, he was a big surprise
