Hypothetical: Puerto Rico becomes an independent country. It then decides to allow Russia to build a naval base in the Port of San Juan.

What then? See the parallels with Ukraine?

The difference is that Puerto Rico didn't get partially invaded by the USA in 2014, in violation of treaties co-signed by both countries, making it look elsewhere for defense.

It's a really poor parallel.

@flipper1966 I appreciate the effort but we don't actually translate "move the goalpost" literally.

In any case the point is Ukraine's situation was caused by Russia and Russia alone. If Russia did not break the pact it signed with Ukraine, Ukraine wouldn't have seeked help from the other signatories. The events happened in a timespan of seven years, not one century :the Ukrainians who are of NATO accession are the same who saw themselves betrayed seven years ago.

@flipper1966 Exactly
No, not really.
@bijouxbroussard Maybe I should stop trying to create analogies. 😂
The US still wouldn’t invade it. Your buddy Putin is the aggressor here.
