How modern is modern?
I have a soft spot for Slim, who led the 14th Army in Burma. He wrote a tremendous book 'Defeat into Victory' and in my eyes one of the best ever English generals. Most decent British Army leaders have been Irish born or Scottish. Slim was an Exception.

@LizOwen I agree he certainly turned a desperate situation into a certain victory without masses of men or modern smart weapons. The 14 Army became better than the japanese at jungle warfare

@Royrogers They did- and they were an amazingly mixed bunch, spread over hundreds of miles of terrible terrain in the longest land campaign fought by the western allies. And ultimately, a very successful one. Around 100,000 Japanese casualties as the allies expelled them from Burma.

@LizOwen Don’t forget Orde Wingate who led the Chindits or David Stirling who founded the SAS 🙂
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@MissTaken I won't. Wingate from an old Scottish family and Stirling from the Scots Guards. I am not so sure about Wingate - I've read his biography - a strange man!
MissTaken · 36-40, F
@LizOwen David Stirling was a cousin of Lord Lovat of Commando Fame 🙂

@MissTaken I think Orde Wingate was under command of general Slim. He lead the chindits through the jungle

Lt Col Stirljng got too near the front snd was captured ended up in Colditz

@MissTaken Was he? The Lovat Scouts were an impressive bunch in the Boer War; they out commandoed the Boer commandoes- all were stalkers and ghillies from the north of Scotland. Lord Lovat was from Inverness way, I think. Churchill called him 'the handomest man who ever cut a throat' - he had his own personal piper at D-day.

@Royrogers silly bugger!
MissTaken · 36-40, F

@MissTaken Thank you. I had a notion it was somebody called Chisholm- no idea where that came from!
