How modern is modern?
I have a soft spot for Slim, who led the 14th Army in Burma. He wrote a tremendous book 'Defeat into Victory' and in my eyes one of the best ever English generals. Most decent British Army leaders have been Irish born or Scottish. Slim was an Exception.

@Royrogers They did- and they were an amazingly mixed bunch, spread over hundreds of miles of terrible terrain in the longest land campaign fought by the western allies. And ultimately, a very successful one. Around 100,000 Japanese casualties as the allies expelled them from Burma.

@MissTaken Was he? The Lovat Scouts were an impressive bunch in the Boer War; they out commandoed the Boer commandoes- all were stalkers and ghillies from the north of Scotland. Lord Lovat was from Inverness way, I think. Churchill called him 'the handomest man who ever cut a throat' - he had his own personal piper at D-day.
