We’re you in the military?

Do you have a favorite or top two favorite modern military leaders of your own or a book that you’ve read?

@TexChik you're very luck to have gotten to meet him a a signed book! That's fantastic. Its so sad how he died. 😔💔🤗😇
TexChik · F
@Montanaman yes .
CharlesRomsey · 61-69, M
@Montanaman Royal Navy myself. Served as Weapons Officer on a destroyer during the Falklands conflict. Messy business.

How modern is modern?
I have a soft spot for Slim, who led the 14th Army in Burma. He wrote a tremendous book 'Defeat into Victory' and in my eyes one of the best ever English generals. Most decent British Army leaders have been Irish born or Scottish. Slim was an Exception.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Royrogers silly bugger!
MissTaken · 36-40, F
@LizOwen Yep Bill Millin
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@MissTaken Thank you. I had a notion it was somebody called Chisholm- no idea where that came from!
Ontheroad · M
U.S. Army, 20+ years, Combat veteran, Retired MSG and while I have several favorite leaders, none would be known to anyone here. I do like General Miley, but of course don't know him and never served under him.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Ontheroad wow! You must have a resilient character. 20+
Thank you for your service!!! I hope your earned extra benefits for the extra year(s)
Ontheroad · M
@Mindful You did learn among many things, resilience, but also dedication, a sense of humor and most of all, how to dedicate yourself to and care for your team. There was always dedication to your men, women and mission. Once you got that down, the rest took care of itself.

The benefits both while in the Army and since were and are great. Gave me a free college education, lifetime medical care and lifetime pension, just to name a few.

I'm retired Army... many years of active duty.

Can you narrow down the question? It's a really broad topic.

I really like the late General Colin Powell, his second book called "It Worked for Me" is quite good.

Of course... I have very technical military treatises that I really like... but those tend to be topic specific, and I'm guessing that's not what you're asking for.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
35 years of Service, retired in 2015

10 Years US Army Medic
15 Years USAF Pararescue Jumper
10 Years USAF Combat Rescue Officer
Retired as Lieutenant Colonel

Most of my heroes as Leaders were simple enlisted Airmen who gave their all saving others.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@spjennifer Amazing!!!! and I really appreciate that you value others as yourself! Evident in you career choice, years of service, and choice of hero’s. We are blessed to have had you for 30 years.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Mindful Thank you, I've usually seen that one doesn't need to have rank or status to be a true leader!
24 years United States Marine Corp where I attained the rank of Captain. Combat veteran.
No favorite leaders. They were all impressive.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@LoneVoice Semper Fi.

1st Bn 9th Marines I Corps RVN 69-70
Pfuzylogic · M
I learned to admire John McCain and that was during the time he was a presidential candidate even though I voted for Obama. I found Admiral Rickover to be a bit bizarre and heard all types of stories about him while I was in the nuclear power program. I did do a report on General Douglas and learned about him when I was in 6th grade.
I did serve 22 years in the U.S. Navy and came out as a Chief Petty Officer.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Pfuzylogic I like the navy. Good people. Congrats and thank you for allllllll your years of service.
….update…
Ha ha I’m so slow… YOUrE the author!
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
Eight years in the infantry.
Ord Wingate, Burma WW2.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
@novaguy2u 8 years ago wingate? What 2003 ?
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
@Royrogers The first question was whether you were in the military: I was eight years in the infantry.
The second question was whether you had a favourite military leader.

20 months, US Army draftee i the 1st lottery 12/1/1969

We'll never forget!

DCarey · 46-50, M

US ARMY 20 years!
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
I was in the military, but I didn’t take an interest in the leaders. They’re never there under fire when the job gets done.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@WintaTheAngle sigh… that’s not true of at least a couple that I know, but yes, it. Can be true.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Mindful They weren’t there in the two wars I served in. One of which should never have happened.
Mindful · 56-60, F
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
Yes, eight years. Favourite book would be Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@novaguy2u thank you and thank you for your service! And for giving me an author!
10liters · 31-35, M

Mindful · 56-60, F

DCarey · 46-50, M
@10liters You shouldn't have invaded Russia.
Allelse · 36-40, M
@10liters Hey!!! Were you at Waterloo? I was on the other side though.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
No. Just an air cadet
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Eddiesolds I don’t know what “just an air cadet” means
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
@Mindful Dont worry about it. Lol! I think it made me more diseplined. I did love marching.. it was fun. Id always get in trouble for coming home late afrer cadets. The place i had to go was downtown. Back then we had a criusing strip. Man the cars were beautiful. I didnt want to go home. Lol!
ElRengo · 70-79, M
I served my country, long years ago when was needed.
About leaders, each historical period had some interesting ones.
My reading list is a wide one, but there is not IMO an enough theoretical frame to cover all conflicts.
Mindful · 56-60, F
It is a broad history. And the egos and issues are never clear. Only the ones that are the most popular. Even I won’t judge because the truth is so limited. It reminds me of the question, “who killed JFK”?@ElRengo
ElRengo · 70-79, M
@Mindful Yes, It is a broad history
Dino11 · M
Gen. Colin Powell
Mindful · 56-60, F
@sunsporter1649 I hope you know that I’m going to look up that name and feel like a fool afterwards. But thank you I needed a tiny laughter break my family awaits to accompany me at lunch TTYL
Mindful · 56-60, F
@sunsporter1649 real name?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Mindful Lieutenant General Chesty Puller USMC
Azlotto · M
We’re you in the military?

Nope. Tried to join the Navy and Air Force. I got rejected from both because of my reconstructed knee.
DDonde · 31-35, M
No, probably would've done me some good maybe. But what do I know...
