How does the state protect democracy from itself/ from the state?

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

That's quite a famous quote. I like it because it's the truth.
@Wraithorn It's a quote? I thought sogdian had immortalized himself!😁✌🏽

hi Wraithorn
I think it is a most haunting quote. See my "story" here - an extract from a newspaper article on a death of a man who had received injuries when The Police were present.
Best wishes
:)

hi puck61
No. "First they came ..." is a poem written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Many variations and adaptations in the spirit of the original have been published in the English language. It deals with themes of persecution, guilt and responsibility.

@puck61 Yes apparently a dude Martin Niemöller said it. :-) it seems that Sogdian reads similar stuff that I read.
@sogdianrock @Wraithorn .....and you both took me completely serious.😢

@sogdianrock Hey! I've been living with myself for 55 years, haven't I?

@puck61 Well me taking you seriously just shows how naive I can be at times :-)
