How does the state protect democracy from itself/ from the state?

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Well, there used to be a 'system' and the constitution, and the "left" and "right" would keep each other in check, but everything and everyone has become so polarized that the 'system' and the constitution are in serious jeopardy. I bitch about people wanting to change the constitution when I guess I want to change it myself. The current political climate is bringing out extremism in a lot of people,,,,,myself included.

That's quite a famous quote. I like it because it's the truth.
