I Hate Retail Job

Recently, I visited the department store I use to work at and chatted with an old employee I use to work with. She told me things that had been going on after I left. Two managers left their jobs. One manager who quit her job did so because she injured a customer's hand with a pen after he called her a ni**er. The customer was upset because an employee told him that these Broncos T'shirts were 50% off, he wanted to speak to a manager about it and when she arrived and told him the shirts weren't on sale that's when he went off on her. My co-worker told me that he was so furious he started calling her all sorts of names from b*tch to ni**ger. This customer then wanted to write to corporate. I guess on how horrible customer service was and asked the manager for a pen and paper, before he was able to give it back, the manager yanked the pen from him which cut his hand. The manager worked at this department store for 14 years. And this is why I am so glad I left my retail job.

sounds like you worked in a very low-end store 😲 I hope you managed to find something more up-market!

@newbie That's correct and not in the best neighborhood either. I did for a while anyway.

@SW-User don't you hate those places where the employees are more busy gossiping with each other than serving the actual customers? sounds like such a place?

where are you now? glad you found something better!
SW-User
@newbie Absolutely. I am not sure, I wasn't there all the time, but when i was, everyone was focused on their task. I use to work at this middle school as a special education para teacher. But within two months that turned sour. And It was better, I liked teaching the kids I was assigned to and the school and my co-workers were awesome.

@SW-User it sounds like that department store has definitely gone to the worse since you left - probably not a coincidence! one thing is gossiping employees, another is the actual manager stabbing a customer - not the best role model for professional conduct and service 😬

why did it turn sour at your new place? it sounds it was great and a good step away from that low-end store!

@newbie Apparently, I wasn't the best fit there. Even though It was a para position and so I didn't need experience to work as a special edu. aide. I just needed a bachelors degree.

@SW-User so what are you doing now? looking around for something new, or just taking a lazy break?
SW-User
@newbie For now taking a lazy break. I am thinking of volunteering though. Just to give me something to do and maybe try to get a job in something that I volunteered in.

@SW-User sounds like a great idea! you seem to be a very caring and giving person 🤗 you're lucky you don't need to earn money so you can take it easy and try to find something you really want to do!
