@MrBrownstone there's no law against it any place that I have ever lived. I've seen the checkbox on many applications "do not contact". I've never had a company ignore it.

But, I think they are allowed if they have the information.

@JoeyFoxx My Boss Told me companies cant contact previous employers because they can lie.

@JoeyFoxx To me, that is a red flag, like you're hiding something that you don't want a new employer to know..

It's certainly possible that some hiring managers are prevented by their employers, but there are no laws restricting it.

@iamnikki it's a very common practice. You shouldn't worry too much about it.

You should be confident about your reasons for looking for a new opportunity. Do NOT bash your current employer. Be confident to describe the reasons you appreciate your current job, but it's not quite the right fit.

If they ASK you why you would prefer they not contact your current employer, it's that you do not want to disrupt the work of your current colleagues. You would rather the notification of your intent to leave be on your terms.

You're not hiding anything. Your new employer, if they are actually worthy of you, should respect this. If they don't, it might not be a place you wish to work.
