Need job advice: Nanny vs. After school position

I have been unemployed for a bit now and want to get back to a part time job, but I am torn. I love kids and being a nanny one -on -one with a child, but the only thing is you do not get other adult interaction really. I may need to live alone soon too, so I wonder if that would be good for my mental health, being w/out adult or social interaction at a job as well as in private life. BUT, it is pretty good pay to be a nanny if you have experience.

I do have several years experience, but here is the other BUT. I didn't get a reference from my last position a few years ago. A medical mishap occurred on my last day and the mom didn't agree with my decision that day, and never gave me a reference. It was really unfortunate b/c i put my ALL into being a nanny. :( And I'm the most responsible person you could get. But now how do I get a new job with no current reference? I do have 2 references from a job like 8 years ago, but would that be enough? I don't know. It is not as current.

Or, I am debating a job possibly in a school setting again, like an afterschool program. But the last time I was an assistant, It was like STRESS 101. I love kids, but being an assistant, you are their teacher, friend, nurse, therapist and parent in ONE. However, the hours might be like 3 hours a day, versus 6 like before. BUT, the pay is not as good as being a nanny. However, I would be able to have some social contacts, b/c I really don't have any now. Just to be around other adults might be nice.

What would you do?
