Careers advice

In the early 1200s a young scholar named Edmund was fast asleep after a hard day's teaching. His late mother appeared to him in a dream. She looked at the drawings he had been working on and asked him, "Son, what are these shapes?" Edmund explained he was planning a lecture for his students and that these were to illustrate geometric figures. His mother was not impressed and drew her own diagram on his palm: three circles within which were written 'Father, Son, Holy Spirit'. "Those are the figures you should be studying!", she scolded.

In the early 2000s a young scholar named Ewa was trying to study for her actuarial exams, amidst constant interruptions from her mother (who was still very much alive). "Daughter, what are all these untidy scribbles?" Ewa explained that this was shorthand notation, that she used to project interest rates, annuities, and lifetimes. Her mother was not impressed and intimated that her daughter should have done something more useful like law 🙄

Edmund subsequently thrived in his career, becoming a canon of Salisbury Cathedral and being elected Archbishop of Canterbury in 1233. After his death he was canonised and is known to history as St Edmund of Abingdon.

Ewa stumbled along in her career, earning a comfortable salary but never the unqualified admiration of her mother who remains convinced to this day that her daughter makes her living from gambling. And although she has the patience of a saint, her chances of earthly recognition are extremely limited owing to having been brought up in the Catholic Church 🤦‍♀️😇

@SunshineGirl Yep I got that. Parents can be a little over bearing at times. I (Mom and I) planned on being a doctor. An eye surgeon. I got through college and was accepted into med school. A month before I was to leave she collapsed and the illness she had been hiding from all of us was revealed. She had heart failure and needed a transplant to survive. She refused that option . I immediately called and declined my placement in medical school to stay with her. She went ballistic and demanded I go (she was a retired professor) . We had a huge fight about it but I stayed. To shut her up though, I did go see my counselor at my undergrad which was 70 miles from the farm. Good grades , as you know, carry a lot of weight and I was offered the chance to take the LSAT...Like right then down the hall. So I took it and did well enough to get a place in that fall's Law School class. My school wanted to keep their good students in house if they could. I had worked at my school's medical school during school and in the summers some...and they told me if I didn't like Law School , they would put in the next fall's freshman class.

Turned out I liked Law School and did well. Because of my decision I saw Momma a lot. She and Daddy would stay at my apartment when she had doctor appointments. We got 5 more years with her. I was there for so much more than if I had gone off to San Antonio . I have never regretted my decision.

@TexChik Oh, thanks for sharing your story. That makes your path and chosen career doubly special.

I am not surprised that you have no regrets about your decision 🙂

@SunshineGirl My adoptive parents were my life! Then as a result of my degree...I was hired and moved to the Dallas area and stumbled across the love of my life. No regrets what so ever.

So it sounds like you have an interest in statistics. There is a great demand for that knowledge in industry. People trained as six sigma black belts doing lean six sigma projects. You might want to investigate it.

@Tastyfrzz I'm an actuarist. I write software that models financial risk for a pension fund.

My mother is a cynical Pole who barely scraped a pass in her secondary school maths certificate 🤦‍♀️
