Two weeks notice

Why do we give two weeks notice to jobs that would not give us two weeks notice if they decided to fire us?

Edited to add: One time, I got notice that I was going to be let go. They were really good employers in a small business who couldn't afford to keep all their employees so they gave me good references and about a month's notice. I wish more jobs went like that.

Because that's not how the world works. Companies literally have all the power. You can't go against a multi-million dollar company who literally could just replace you the next day like nothing happened. We are highly insignificant when you look at the bigger picture.

@HannibalMontanimal I have been involved with spotting good employees and I have also been involved in weeding out and with the very difficult decision to terminate employees employment and it’s almost never as simple as you described. In fact the power dynamic explanation is never the motivation as companies will keep good employees to make money from their labor in exchange for an agreed wage. To further my point, it costs hundreds and even thousands of dollars to train and get any employee settled into their jobs and no sane employer would through all that effort away lightly especially since it also costs hundreds and sometimes thousands to terminate that same employee only to have start all over with a new employee.
I hope my explanation and insight shows that your powerful rich company nonsense is just that, nonsense and really it just misses the mark completely about how employees are managed- at least when a workplace is run properly.
I know that you could come up with all sorts of employment horror stories, but remember that there are bad and bad employers and there are plenty of good and bad employees too.
That said, my perspective will withstand any possible criticism or what if’s that you can invent.

@wunderluv But most places are not managed properly. We don't live in a perfect world where companies actually treat their employees fairly and give them opportunities. I see people getting fired all the time for stupid reasons. I see good employees getting fired for doing nothing wrong and then they always keep the bad ones. This is just my experience. Yes not all companies are like that but this is what I've seen. There is lots of favoritism at the workplace and management doesn't ever do a good job of weeding out the good and the bad employees. What you're describing is a fantasy or a fairy tale. A world that we wish existed but it doesn't. We live in an unbalanced and fallen world.

@HannibalMontanimal companies run as you described will absolutely not thrive nor have a long term future.. for any company these days to last in the long term they must make rational and cost based decisions. Yes, unfortunately favoritism is a very stupid basis to make employee choices and it does happen but when this happens that employer is poisoning their own company culture and again I can tell you that company will either fail or come to be known as a bad company to work for and they will pay in a number of other ways.
Of course don’t take my advice I’ve only been in management positions in several very successful companies and been the confidant/ advisor to decision makers

@wunderluv Management and supervisors only do what the higher ups ask them to do. Companies only think about what's best for the company. People have lives outside of work. Not everyone wants to work their life away in a factory doing repetitive work
