Osprey - Sea Eagle
There are at least 24 - 30 breeding pairs on the Mandurah Estuary.
They can be seen regularly circling high in the sky looking for fish.
They dive at speed and with talons outstretched, latch onto a fish.
Often they half submerge themselves to win their prey.
With prey firmly held in their talons they will seek out a high vantage point, such as a stag tree to devour their prey.
Ripping the prey apart with their hooked beak.
Breeding season starts from May/June with eggs being incubated during August and September.
Up to 4 eggs are laid but often not all the chicks will survive.
The female Osprey will do the majority of the incubating with the male bringing her fish meals.
Chicks will start to hatch after 36 days.
Chicks are seen in October and leave the nest around Christmas Time.
