Its a hunk of a blue spruce tree that i felled out of my back yard. It was topped in the 60's and left to grow into a 40 foot tall bush, blocking too much sunlight and dropping those needles all year long. Since removing it, my neighbor's lemon tree has gone from frail looking bush, of the likes Charlie Brown might have, to a full round 15 ft tall tree full of lemons. My neighbor on the back side used to have to pressure wash his roof every year to get rid of all the Moss that used to grow on it. He hasn't had to do that since I cut the tree down. The tree was blocking all his sunlight. Just saying. I didn't like doing it but it had to go. I know the birds relying on it for shelter and habitation so I made a few bird houses out of it some of its pieces. This is one of them. That's a chickadee that moved into it. It's also been used by titmice and nuthatches.
@Spoiledbrat squirrels have destroyed my wooden bird feeders whenever they ran out of food. They're cute and all, but they're horders and will empty feeders as fast as they can no matter if they're hungry or not. ..and they have to chew to keep their teeth trim. There are many youtube videos and some PBS specials about the ongoing "war" between backyard "twitchers" and squirrels. The twitcher community still searching for the holy grail. Which is a squirrel proof bird feeder. Lol
My balance was a pack of Doberman Pinschers who know they'll never catch any birds so they leave them to their seeds. The squirrels, however, .... they all keep each other occupied and me entertained. Although, i have had to rescue a squirrel or two when the dogs have been better organized. Another time, i had to scare away an adolescent redtail hawk. I know i shouldn't have intervened and let nature take its course. But i have my nature to tend to as well..
