[Biology] Should there be more than five senses?

We all know the common ones of course:
Sight,
Sound,
Touch,
Taste and arguably
Smell.

Why do we not have more than these? Yes I know Aristotle, more than 2.5 thousand years ago! 😒

Yet I have just given thought to our sense of balance and looking further others have given mention to our sense of pain and internal pressure as opposed to external pressure. Then there is the sense of cold and heat. And senses such as kinesthesia or body movements.

Now it's been argued that these are a combination of other senses. Yet you can't make that argument for sense of balance.

Hearing and balancing are not related. Deaf people from birth often have a good sense of balance because it's separate.

So shouldn't that be a different sense? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Proprioception . . that was the sixth sense I was encouraged to develop as a young gymnast/dancer/athlete. We mainly take it for granted, but the effects can be devastating if it deteriorates.

@SunshineGirl I refuse to take sides with a medical journal on the second reference link.

They are calling it kinesthesia. They must have a reason why they are calling it that now.

They are the authorities on this. I most certainly am not.

@DeWayfarer I'm sure they do. I'm only repeating what I was taught and read . . Oliver Sacks, a neurologist and philosopher, wrote perceptively on cases observed in his patients.

@SunshineGirl there obviously is a huge nomenclature debate going on.

I'm not going to be apart of that debate!

My qualifications are NIL! 😆
