Real?
How about responsible and mature?
Karma is simply "the Law of Cause and Effect" as it applies to social and psychological consequences.
A wise person knows that for every action there is a result or a reaction.
Sometimes it can be delayed,
such as the results of long term gluttony and unhealthy lifestyle,
or the moment when someone finally gets fed up with someone's harmful behaviours.
But most effects follow very quickly on the action - such as a car accident when one has taken one's mind off the driving for a split second.
No matter what we sense or perceive, we are responsible for our actions, words, thoughts and emotions - ie, how we interpret and understand our experiences.
