I Want to Join the Freemasons

I am hoping to join the Freemasons in September. I would have already had it not been for the pandemic. In this video, Benjamin Franklin (or rather an actor playing him) explains what Freemasonry is all about. It makes me want to join even more!

Do you like rolling up one of your trouser legs ?
MrSimons · 41-45, M
@Dlrannie Yes, why not?:)
Catzgano · 31-35, F
@Dlrannie why do they do that?
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@MrSimons Then you will make a good Mason I guess😂
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@Catzgano I have no idea 😂😂

@Catzgano It's an old tradition apparently. In times gone by only "free men" could join and rolling up your trousers is meant to prove you are not wearing shackles.

@Dlrannie I just told you the reason. It's not really all that funny or strange when you know what the reason is.
Catzgano · 31-35, F
@MrSimons seems funny to me lol
MrSimons · 41-45, M
@Catzgano Oh well, I think it is one of the little details of the fraternity that make it interesting. It wouldn't have been funny in the days of slavery of course. There was a practical purpose to it then. I suppose it does seem funny today but it helps emphasise the importance of freedom. One of the things they have to be sure of for example is someone is joining completely of their own free will and that they have not been pressured into it by anyone.

@MrSimons it’s for guys only?
MrSimons · 41-45, M
@Catzgano Traditionally so, but there are women Freemason groups that have been around for the last 100 years or so. I am told they are even more secretive than the men.
Catzgano · 31-35, F
@MrSimons I think same sex clubs should be banned allow anyone to join
MrSimons · 41-45, M
@Catzgano That sounds rather anti-freedom to me.
Catzgano · 31-35, F
@MrSimons it’s diversified. Women have been banned from clubs for centuries
MrSimons · 41-45, M
@Catzgano I think as long as women are free to form their own groups and clubs there is no problem. Sometimes men and women like to do things together, but there are also times when they just want to be with members of their own sex, where they can truly relax and be themselves. I used to be a member of the Boys' Brigade as a kid and I would have hated it if girls were allowed to join. I would have felt quite uncomfortable and wouldn't have had the confidence to try and fail like I did when it was just boys.
