The why is that all of it is a construct of man... it's humankind's way of explaining what they don't understand and what they fear, replacing it with some benevolent but demanding and vengeful entity.

@Ontheroad Jesus suffered horribly on the cross just so he could save us from the condemnation that sin brought to mankind. That sure doesn't sound like a demanding and vengeful God to me. He didn't have to do it, but he volunteered because he was thinking more about us than himself.
