Why do people think they have to believe in Jesus

Or religion in order to believe in a Supreme Being. Why not just believe in a nondenominational Creator?

Have to?

It's a personal choice. It's amusing to me that just because you don't want to subscribe to any religion, you have to challenge those who do.

Whether you're an atheist, an agnostic, or a heretic, when it comes to beliefs that are essential to one's identity, principles, or traditions, it doesn't make sense to demand an explanation from anyone why they believe what (or Who) they believe. Leave them be if this is their source of inspiration, strength, and peace.
@IamCuriousBabe I don't feel he meant that in a harmful way. It doesn't hurt to ask questions. Sometimes those questions lead to understanding and change of heart. We can all learn from each other. I didn't see anything hostile in his question.

@IamCuriousBabe how would one know they're on the truth if no questions are asked?
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@Iwantyourhotwife Truth is very subjective. Because proof of faith that works for anyone is about experience, and it relies heavily on anecdotal evidence.

If you yourself are seeking to know if faith in Jesus is true, you won't go anywhere with just discussions. If they say it is true, why would it matter to you personally unless you are invested in it?
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@LadyGrace What matters is the intention behind the question. Can't deny that some people (I don't mean the poster per se) just want to pull you into some time-wasting debate because they have so much time on their hands.

My question shouldn't even be taken to be hostile. That's just how I generally respond.

@IamCuriousBabe I've often heard this question asked and I have never heard answered so brilliantly as you have
In a democracy, I would call it, the right of the individual

@antonioioio Appreciate your comment. I would reserve discussions when it allows for a healthy exchange. I get annoyed whenever I see careless and hateful comments pertaining to religion here. They only stem from disrespect, lack of education or upbringing.

@IamCuriousBabe any way a person wants to worship is fine by me. I just wondered why some people feel it's the only way to worship
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@Axeroberts For most, it's tied to tradition and history. Like I previously mentioned, there isn't much left to explain when it is part of one's identity, of one's life. It's also partly due to the influence of people we spend a lot of time with.

The Christian faith is also backed up by history, along with scholarly studies, and there are real places tied to His life.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@IamCuriousBabe great excuses but in the end we choose.
@Axeroberts And how do you know what or whom to choose, except God told us?
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@Axeroberts I see you chose to refer to them as "excuses". So like why are you averse to the idea of Jesus being worshipped? What is this to you personally?

I think it would help shape the discussion better if you expound on your side: why do you believe there should be an alternative? If Jesus isn't good enough, then who or what should people believe in? What is exactly a "nondenominational Creator"?
@IamCuriousBabe I agree. Tradition and history aren’t excuses they are reasons. I will say that I’m not the kind of Christian whose faith is so fragile that I must try to argue everyone else’s faith away, so mine doesn’t crumble. But a lot of Catholic faith is tied to our history and tradition and it’s comforting to me.
@IamCuriousBabe I really enjoyed your well thought out responses btw.
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@DarkHeaven Thank you. I was raised Catholic until I was 10, and many of my relatives were still practicing it. I have fond memories of the rituals and traditions, and until now I find it peaceful to walk into and sit in a cathedral.
@IamCuriousBabe I left my faith after I graduated because I’m gay and I felt it didn’t have a place for me because of it. Recently, I’ve felt the call just over a year ago and decided to go back. I found a very inclusive church and my priest knows I’m gay and married to my partner but accepts me for who I am and even attended our wedding, although he couldn’t bless it because of the church’s official stance on it. I just need to feel accepted by my church, so it’s a compromise I’m comfortable with.
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@DarkHeaven It is a journey, which is unfortunately not a straight path. I'm glad that you found that priest and is there to offer support and comfort.
@IamCuriousBabe I’m truly happy about that. I was sad when I was estranged from my faith. I was deeply spiritual as a young girl. I even considered becoming a nun when I was a young girl. Can you believe that? My faith is very important to me.
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@DarkHeaven And that's precisely what non-believers can't understand, why this belief is so ingrained in us. I don't think it's just an emotional state.
@IamCuriousBabe the incense smell when I step in the chapel, and I hear the prayers. It takes me somewhere. this is one of my favorite songs and takes me instantly to some of my most happiest days.

@LadyGrace i have a conscious. And the fruit from God is always true
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@IamCuriousBabe sorry I haven't made myself clear but I am not against people who worship Jesus but I find some people who are non believers think that is the only way to worship. But however a person worships is fine with me
@Iwantyourhotwife @IamCuriousBabe
If you yourself are seeking to know if faith in Jesus is true, you won't go anywhere with just discussions.

We can achieve a lot by asking questions through discussion. That's what they do in school and colleges, right? This is the way we learn from each other and so much can be accomplished through valuable conversation. Jesus said that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. After Jesus's mission was accomplished and He ascended into heaven, before He left, He told his disciples to spread the good word of salvation, so how else would we know, unless God had left His Word with us and also through word of mouth, so great a salvation?
@Axeroberts I'm not sure why you made such a statement because I never said you didn't have a conscience.
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@LadyGrace I am curious about this salvation you talk about. Is your belief because of what the Bible says?
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
@LadyGrace The reason I say that is that simply talking on and on won't get you anyhere. They are popular in campuses because students are naturally curious. You seek with your mind and heart. At the time that you are open to receive, that's when a discussion can influence a listener to know more.
