I disagree. I'm not a spectator. We have significant control although it varies depending on life circumstances. However, we all have the power to choose our response to whatever occurs.

@Abstraction responses are only reactions which means you may be undertaking efforts to mitigate the effects. It’s far from control.

@xbandoleerx Hmm... I'm not so sure. There are several types of actions I take.
1. System 1 responses (neurological definition) which are automated such as slamming on brakes to a stimuli of a dog running in front of my car. Or detecting that an object is closer than another. Those decisions often kick in before I'm aware.
2. System 2 responses (neurological definition) where instead of reacting, I consider multiple options. I could get angry. I could ignore. I could respond in kindness. I consider my options and I am in control of my response. They haven't made me do anything. I have responded according to my values and character, not their stimulus.
3. System 2 actions where there is no outside stimuli. I think up a plan, make a decision I want to do it and carry it out. In trying to complete that plan, many obstacles may come my way, but using system 2 thinking and choices I am not controlled by those obstacles. In so many cases I achieve the plan I thought of.
*System 2 thinking is characterised by executive functions of the mind. System 1 thinking is largely automated responses although we can retrain those patterns.
