How much control do we have?

We have no control over anything in this life, from the right to getting born to the way we die and anything that falls in between these two events!

Ultimately, God is in control. We do have a free will to control our decisions, but not the subsequent consequences.

I disagree. I'm not a spectator. We have significant control although it varies depending on life circumstances. However, we all have the power to choose our response to whatever occurs.

@Abstraction responses are only reactions which means you may be undertaking efforts to mitigate the effects. It’s far from control.

@xbandoleerx Hmm... I'm not so sure. There are several types of actions I take.
1. System 1 responses (neurological definition) which are automated such as slamming on brakes to a stimuli of a dog running in front of my car. Or detecting that an object is closer than another. Those decisions often kick in before I'm aware.
2. System 2 responses (neurological definition) where instead of reacting, I consider multiple options. I could get angry. I could ignore. I could respond in kindness. I consider my options and I am in control of my response. They haven't made me do anything. I have responded according to my values and character, not their stimulus.
3. System 2 actions where there is no outside stimuli. I think up a plan, make a decision I want to do it and carry it out. In trying to complete that plan, many obstacles may come my way, but using system 2 thinking and choices I am not controlled by those obstacles. In so many cases I achieve the plan I thought of.

*System 2 thinking is characterised by executive functions of the mind. System 1 thinking is largely automated responses although we can retrain those patterns.

We have all the control, spiritually speaking. God gave all, free will. If He manipulated that in any way, then it wouldn't be free will. He never forces anyone to do anything. Not even to choose Him as our personal Savior. That's strictly our choice. God loves all. If anyone rejects His Plan of Salvation, and says, “I don't need you. I want nothing to do with you.” God shall honor their request, but we can't say it was He that separated us from Him for eternity. By our own tongue, we condemn ourselves to eternal seperation from God. Sin cannot enter heaven. If so, it wouldn't be heaven. He said in His Word that he is not willing that ANY should perish or be separated from him. His utmost desire is to save every person on earth. That's why He came.

I can control if I choose to be content and happy, or complain, love or hate, trust in God or turn to despair.

@Carazaa you didn't say one thing Carazza 😊😊😊 . No pain no gain 😂😂😂

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for participating with such enthusiasm and sharing your wisdom. It’s been a pleasure listening to your views and thoughts.

@xbandoleerx Thank you!!
We belong to systems bigger than us. Life itself has its rules and we are very much a pawn in the big scheme of life, our desires are imposed on us, they lead us to undertake some actions. We belong to a human society which also has its rules of survival, it's easy to feel like a victim of these systems.
But on the other hand our will to control everything should also be tempered, we also learn through challenging situations, we love thanks to ordeals.

We have as much control as we will let ourselves have.
Nelladell · 80-89, F
What has already been said here.

We can learn to control our reactions -- our emotions -- our inner life. We can choose to learn to be happy, and we CAN be happy because happiness is at the core of each of us.
I can control and sometimes i can't. I need to start with self discipline

We have control over what we approve of..

We have control over what we hate..

Now being human we shall sometimes do the things we hate and fail to do the things we approve of.. But we can still retain the right spirit / attitude / opinions that will act to limit our negatives and motivate our positive actions..

I think control is an illusion. We can influence but that's about it.
xbandoleerx · 56-60, M
We play with the cards we have been dealt with. Some play well while others perform badly. That’s about all the control one has and nothing more.
Carazaa · F
@xbandoleerx God has promised he will help us if we trust him!
xbandoleerx · 56-60, M
@Carazaa Yes. Thanks for providing credence to my statement
@xbandoleerx I believe what you're not changing, you're choosing. Life is all about learning, growing, choices, changing what needs to be changed, and not staying stuck. Using our ingenuity and creativity. I know prayer changes everything.

We have control if we live with God. Without him its chaos that never ends
