You make the call!

Runners on first and second, no outs. The batter hits a line shot toward second base, the umpire, standing about ten feet in front of second base, is unable to get out of the way and the ball hits him. What's the ruling?

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that in front of the base rule.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@ChipmunkErnie lol...I was shocked also. I thought any time an ump was hit, the ball remains live.

Live ball umpires are in the field of play
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@biandlargeny This one will probably surprise you, as it did me. It's a dead ball, the batter is awarded first and runners advance one base, if it was a force play or they were stealing. Now, if the ball had passed the infielder's when contact was made, it's a live ball.
biandlargeny · 56-60, M
Very interesting. I forgot that the umpire I. This scene was in front of the base. I stand corrected
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@biandlargeny I didn't make it perfectly clear either.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
But yes, I always thought the ball was live regardless of where the ump was standing.
