Happy 60th Anniversary To The Greatest Pitching Duel In Major League Baseball History

On this date, 60 years ago, the SF Giants 25 year old Juan Marichal squared off against the Milwaukee Braves 42 year old Warren Spahn in a 16 inning pitching duel that ended 1-0 when Willie Mays hit a walk-off homer in the bottom half of the frame. Astonishingly, Marichal threw 227 pitches to Spahn's 201...numbers that will never be repeated today in baseball's pitch count era. The game featured 7 hall of famers including Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, Hank Aaron and Eddie Matthews, in addition to Marichal and Spahn.

Giants manager Alvin Dark wanted to pull Marichal, who insisted on staying in the game as long as the old guy continued pitching. 🤣

Mays promised Marichal he'd end it, and stayed true by driving a screwball over the wall down the left field line at Candlestick...which was before they moved the fences in.

Haddix had a pretty good duel against Burdette, too
@sunsporter1649 LOL...a bit of an understatement. 12 perfect innings, only to lose - heartbreak. Another legendary game!

@BizSuitStacy Talk about bad luck....

Starting pitchers now barely reach 16 innings in a month.
@eli1601 sadly that's true

Sadly nowadays someone would be crying
@MarineBob These days, starting pitchers toss 75-100 pitches, and then hand it over to the bullpen.

Did Marichal hit anybody with a bat?
@graphite Nope, it wasn't the Dodgers 😉
