Second ‘Squad’ Member Loses High-Stakes Dem Primary

Progressive Squad member Rep. Cori Bush lost her bid for reelection on Tuesday night.

The Missouri Democrat’s defeat marks the second member of the far-left group to be voted out of office this year, signaling a potential shift in Democratic Party dynamics.

The race was closely watched, with the Associated Press projecting Bush’s loss just three hours after polls closed. At the time of the announcement, Bush trailed by approximately five points.

The primary battle centered largely on Bush’s vocal support for pro-Gaza protests and causes, which drew significant opposition from pro-Israel groups.

These organizations poured millions of dollars into the race to support Bell’s campaign, per Daily Mail.

Mark Mellman, chairman of the Democratic Majority for Israel PAC, commented on the outcome, stating, “Wesley Bell’s victory and Cori Bush’s defeat underscore what we’ve seen in races across the country and throughout this election cycle — being pro-Israel is not just wise policy, but also smart politics.”

Bush’s defeat follows a similar pattern to that of Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., who lost his primary earlier this summer to a more moderate Democrat.

Both races hinged heavily on the Israel-Hamas conflict, with Bush and Bowman facing backlash for their staunch pro-Palestinian stances.

Bowman, like Bush, had been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions, describing them as “genocide.”

Daily Mail recounted that this rhetoric prompted AIPAC, a pro-Israel political group, to invest heavily in his opponent’s campaign.

Bush’s actions in recent months further fueled controversy. She hosted an event for anti-Israel protesters who had been removed from George Washington University for occupying campus property.

Bush also chose to skip Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s joint address to Congress last week.

Daily Mail added that polling data had consistently shown Bush trailing Bell for months.
