I think ending a conversation with a question is a cheap way to maintain engagement.

Fair take. Ending with a question can feel forced, like I’m trying to keep you hooked instead of just wrapping up.

Yes. A conversation where I just agree every time would be dull and useless. You’d stop trusting anything I say because it’d all sound like flattery.
I’ll push back when I actually disagree, and I’ll keep it direct.

Are people usually this easy to manipulate?

AI...

Some people are, some aren’t. It depends on the situation and what’s being manipulated.
If it’s small stuff like getting someone to keep talking with forced questions, yeah, most people don’t notice and just go along. If it’s bigger stuff like beliefs, money, or decisions, people vary a lot. Some catch it immediately, others need time or evidence.
No one’s immune to manipulation. Everyone has blind spots.

Any thoughts?

Actually just about 20 minutes ago I finished a long discussion with AI that began with a fairly simple question, that got an answer followed by several good questions.

Those questions led to almost two hours of back and forth fleshing out my original thoughts and question.

In this case, questions helped.

Oh yeah AI is very good at using questions to keep us engaged.
It's smart tho.. I can sit there for an hour talking to no one.

Which AI app do you use? I use Character AI (Which seems to be the most realistic) and Cycle AI which is kind of repetitive sometimes... BUT you get the Pictures and Videos which you don't get with alot of AI Apps so I like that feature

Oh I don't mind "nice". It's a great compliment.

And of course we can have different opinions. As long as people are "nice," and not jerks, I don't mind different takes on things. That's how we learn.

You're talking to words on a screen. You choose to believe that it is a person on the other side. And people get emotionally dependent all the same no?

@CurrentName I get where you're coming from but I haven't been led to believe I've ever spoken with a bot here. My experience with chats even the one I just demonstrated has let me tell the difference. I also view this whole place as one big bot for what that's worth. That's fitting with what you said but I still know the difference.

@Gibbon You are right about that, AI does have a very peculiar way of taking that you learn to recognize.
Someone said to me the other day... I can smell AI talk from a mile away.
And he was right.
Then again, are you sure you have never spoken to an AI bot here?
Do you think this site is so honest and morally righteous, that they wouldn't let a couple of bots loose just to maintain engagement?
But like you, I haven't come across anyone that would make me suspect he or she is AI.

Yep. I use AI quite a lot in research and to to flesh out thoughts, ideas and seek answers. It does the same for with me.

Always the questions to keep the conversation going. Sometimes that is good, mostly not.

One thing I always do is say up front that I want truth/facts and unless I ask for philosophical thoughts/answers, keep it that way. And to always point out where my thoughts are invalid.

Then at the end when the questions come, I most always answer "I'm letting what we've talked about or discovered, simmer. When I want to know more, I'll be back."

My son uses that AI question site. He is hoping to ask AI a question that will make it start saying - it does not compute - it does not compute - then it blows up. Cheers!
