Another outage for card payments.

This will continue to decline as the years go by.
Arrived at the cricket match, payment card in hand.
"Sorry, our system is down, here is a ticket, just present it at the gate for free entry".
Never even asked about cash, which I always carry.
Though I said nowt. 🙂

Happens on the buses occasionally both in the UK and Norway. But these days any permanent physical shop in Norway is obliged to take cash if it is offered so you won't get any actual goods for nothing. I presume that this would also apply to permanent installations like sports arenas and cinemas too.

The law on being required to take cash was changed recently in response to the continuing threat of disruption from Russia and others attacking data network infrastructure and every household received a leaflet exhorting us to keep several days worth of food, water, and cash on hand.

@ninalanyon There is no law that businesses must take cash.
If they choose to go cash-free then that is their right.
They lose minimal business because probably 80% of people are happy to not carry cash.

@Gusman It was that way in Norway too until last year. It's still that way in the UK. But when you have Russia and its allies threatening to take down your network infrastructure cash suddenly starts to look like a good thing to have so the Norwegian government has taken steps to ensure that that alternative remains viable. Another reason for it was that not everyone wishes or can use electronic payments and that subset of society should also be able to participate in ordinary daily life.

I have heard that other Nordic countries are considering something similar

Wouldn't happen here. They would close down the event, before not asking for cash. Refunding of course those that already paid.

Can you imagine any business continuing to exist without payment?

Not going to happen. Not fair to those that already paid, yet haven't received.
