What was it like to do PE in bare feet?

Growing up in the US, going barefoot in PE was unheard of. We always wore sneakers (trainers) and socks. I remember a few gymnastic lessons in elementary school where we took our shoes off, but socks stayed on. After doing some research, I found out that it’s common in the UK to do PE in bare feet. Did you remove your footwear while getting changed, or were you told to? After reading some people’s experiences, I feel like I missed out on something.

We did gymnastics and dance in bare feet. Socks alone are too dangerous on hard floors. If you forgot your trainers for other lessons you had to go barefoot. We left our outdoor shoes in the changing rooms.

@GentleLucille what was your experience like? Did you like it? I think I would’ve enjoyed it myself.

@RaceFan88 It was ok, I loved doing gymnastics. Not so nice in the winter though when you had to walk from the changing room to the gym with nothing on your feet.

@GentleLucille yeah I can see that being a bit uncomfortable. I did gymnastics too when I was a kid. I did it recreationally, and did it twice in PE when I was in elementary school. However, they made us keep our socks on. Looking back, it wasn’t very safe lol

@RaceFan88 Doesn't sound very safe! I usually went without shoes and socks at home as a kid, so being barefoot at school didn't bother me much.

@GentleLucille yeah I don’t know how we didn’t slip and fall. In school, the only protection from the hard gym floor was a thin mat. Definitely not safe to be running around in socks lol! I hardly went barefoot at home when I was a kid, wish I did though because I love it now.

@GentleLucille same here, two corridors between the changing room and the gym to negotiate bare foot x
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Hayleywg it was fine in the summer, not so fun in winter when the floor was cold and sometimes wet.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@GentleLucille yes very true! Chilly lino!
RebeccaG · 51-55, F
@GentleLucille couldn’t wait to get to the mats!

Not sure why the didn’t let us wear trainers from the changing room to the gym! @Hayleywg @GentleLucille

@Hayleywg No outdoor shoes allowed in our gym and there wasn't space enough to leave them outside. You picked up dust and dirt when you were walking to the gym. Once I was doing a handstand in gymnastics and my teacher said I had grubby feet. Hardly surprising 🙄
RaceFan88 · 31-35, M
@GentleLucille why would your teacher even point that out? I’d be embarrassed if someone said that to me in front of other people.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@GentleLucille mercifully by secondary school everything was much cleaner x.
RebeccaG · 51-55, F
@Hayleywg Far better with a clean floor x.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@RebeccaG Our dance studio was spotless as no outdoor shoes were permitted 🙂 It was just that walk from the changing room to the gym that was the problem.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@GentleLucille I know what you mean!
RebeccaG · 51-55, F
@Hayleywg fortunately the changing room was near the gym x.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Hayleywg I can still remember the patter of bare feet on lino 🙂
RebeccaG · 51-55, F
@GentleLucille sane here, chilly lino floor on bare feet!
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@RebeccaG So cold lining up outside in gym knickers and nothing on your feet! 🥶
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@GentleLucille I was teaching today, chilly on the feet in the gym!
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Hayleywg Oh goodness, I bet the girls were keen to keep moving today! 🙂
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
Mats down, so stand on those. The gym floor is wooden, better than lino! @GentleLucille
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
@Hayleywg Those metal wall bars can be painful to climb on in the cold 😬

What were your girls doing in the gym today?
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
Vaulting and beam today for one class and floor for two classes x @GentleLucille
