What was it like to do PE in bare feet?

Growing up in the US, going barefoot in PE was unheard of. We always wore sneakers (trainers) and socks. I remember a few gymnastic lessons in elementary school where we took our shoes off, but socks stayed on. After doing some research, I found out that it’s common in the UK to do PE in bare feet. Did you remove your footwear while getting changed, or were you told to? After reading some people’s experiences, I feel like I missed out on something.

I'm a Brit and we always wore trainers (or pumps, as we called them) for PE. The only time we didn't was when we did dance, as in artistic dance.
I've never heard of that before! Maybe it was before my time...

@Lacemaker from what I’ve found, it depends on the school. Some are strictly bare feet indoors, some give a choice, and some it’s bare feet for gymnastics/dance only and shoes for everything else. It’s not like that here in the US, you’re in shoes for all activities.

@Lacemaker yes, it certainly is a bit odd.
