What was it like to do PE in bare feet?

Growing up in the US, going barefoot in PE was unheard of. We always wore sneakers (trainers) and socks. I remember a few gymnastic lessons in elementary school where we took our shoes off, but socks stayed on. After doing some research, I found out that it’s common in the UK to do PE in bare feet. Did you remove your footwear while getting changed, or were you told to? After reading some people’s experiences, I feel like I missed out on something.

I did all PE barefoot in school as it was the school rules and we knew beforehand so we all removed our shoes and socks/tights in the changing room and walked into the gym or sports halls barefoot. Outside it was a choice between plimsolls or barefoot and I always chose barefoot.

@SandraB I wish I had the opportunity to do PE barefoot. Probably would’ve felt a bit awkward at first, but I think I would have enjoyed it because it sounds like it was a positive experience. I’ve been suffering with foot problems my whole life, so I feel like if I had more opportunities to go barefoot as a child, that I wouldn’t be having foot problems today.
